My ‘cut paper’ series began years ago when I discovered Pablo Picasso’s lesser known works utilizing found materials. His work inspired me because it questioned my perception of what is considered a “precious” piece of art. Picasso recycled humble materials into striking sculptures. In ‘cut paper’ I apply that same spirit of reclamation to fish tin wrappers in an effort to showcase their timeless beauty and recall Portugal’s rich history of tile making: Azulejos.
